Frequently Asked Questions

What are some traditional design elements seen in Japanese ceramic tableware?

Traditional Japanese ceramic tableware in both traditional and contemporary styles are often rustic and minimal.

When patterns are used this is usually a connection to nature in some way. Natural motifs like cherry blossoms, lotus leaves and waves are often symbolic and all have different meanings. For example, the chrysanthemum flower is one of the most common designs we see in handcrafted Japanese pieces. It is now the symbol of the Japanese empire and means longevity.

Earthy colour palettes and rough textures are another connection to nature. Some glazes purposely highlight certain unique elements in a piece and irregularities are embraced.
